What are cookies and how do they work?
Cookies are text files containing a small amount of data which a web browser receives from a web server and stores on your computer in the form of name – value. This data is sent back to the web server the next time you visit the same website. Thanks to cookies, the site remembers the actions you performed for some time so that you do not need to re-enter certain data again. Cookies are commonly used, for example, to store the contents of your shopping cart in e-shops and to store other user preferences when visiting a web page. We distinguish between two basic types of cookies: first-party and third-party cookies:
- First-party cookies – these are generated when you first load a web page and first interact with the website operator’s server. The data stored include the selected colour schemes, website resolution, language settings and many other parameters. These values are created by the site you visit. This data is used exclusively by the site that stored the data in the cookies.
- Third-party cookies – these are generated by a domain other than the domain of the site which the website user visits. They are typically created when you browse a website while various ad banners are displayed. After a banner is downloaded and loaded, there is an interaction with the third party server where the site will identify the user using cookies which can be subsequently monitored whenever the user enters a website with the same banner.
Cookies can be customized based on your preference. You can delete all cookies stored on your computer, and most browsers also offer the option of preventing the storage of cookies on your computer in the first place. However, if you use this option you may need to manually set some preferences whenever you visit the site in question, and you may also be unable to use some services and features available on the site. For more info about how to set up and process copies, visit AboutCookies.org (English only).
